There is / are

There is / are ＋名詞＋場所＝「（場所に）〜がある・いる」

1There is / are の文とは

「（ある場所に）〜がある・〜がいる」と、ものや人がそこにあることを伝えるときは〈There is / There are ＋名詞〉を使います。場所を表す語句は、ふつう文の最後に置きます。

この文の there には「そこに」という意味はありません。文を始める合図のような語なので、和訳には出しません。

There is a park near my house.

私の家の近くに公園があります。

There are three cats in the box.

箱の中にねこが3びきいます。

There is a tall tree in front of the school.

学校の前に高い木があります。

2is と are の使い分け

be動詞は、あとに続く名詞に合わせます。名詞が1つ（単数）や数えられない名詞なら is、2つ以上（複数）なら are です。

あとに続く名詞	be動詞	例
単数の名詞（a ／ an ＋名詞）	is	There is a cup on the table.
数えられない名詞（milk, water, snow など）	is	There is some milk in the glass.
複数の名詞（books, people など）	are	There are many books in the library.

There is と There are の図解。左はテーブルの上にカップが1つで There is a cup、右は箱の中にねこが3びきで There are three cats。あとに続く名詞から be 動詞へ矢印がもどり、be 動詞は名詞に合わせることを表す — 図2　is か are かは、あとに続く名詞で決まる

There is some milk in the glass.

コップに牛乳が少し入っています。

There are many books in the library.

図書館にはたくさんの本があります。

There are a lot of people at the station.

駅にたくさんの人がいます。

There is は話し言葉では There's と短くできます。There are は書くときにはふつう短くしません。

3過去の文

「〜があった・〜がいた」と過去のことを言うときは、is を was に、are を were にかえます。

There was a big tree here.

ここに大きな木がありました。

There were many children in the park yesterday.

昨日、公園にはたくさんの子どもがいました。

There was a lot of snow last winter.

去年の冬は雪がたくさん降りました。

There was の図解。時間の線の左（過去）には大きな木があり、右の今は切りかぶだけ。前にあったものは There was a big tree here. と was で言う。is は was、are は were になる — 図3　前にあったものは There was / were

4否定文と疑問文

否定文は be動詞のあとに not を置きます。複数の名詞の否定文では、「1つも〜ない」の意味で any をよく使います。〈There is / are no ＋名詞〉でも「〜がない」と言えます。

There isn't a hospital in this town.

この町には病院がありません。

There aren't any eggs in the fridge.

冷蔵庫に卵が1つもありません。

There were no clouds in the sky.

空には雲が1つもありませんでした。

疑問文は be動詞を there の前に出し、答えるときも there と be動詞を使います。数をたずねるときは〈How many ＋複数の名詞＋ are there 〜?〉です。

5天気・ニュースの英文で

天気予報やニュースでは、雨の可能性や出来事、被害の有無を伝えるときに There is / are の文がよく使われます。

There is a chance of rain this afternoon.

今日の午後は雨が降る可能性があります。

There was a strong earthquake in the area last night.

昨夜その地域で強い地震がありました。

There were long lines at the airport this morning.

今朝、空港には長い列ができていました。

There were no reports of damage.

被害の報告はありませんでした。

6よくある間違い

There is / are のあとには、a book のようなはじめて話題にするものを置きます。my book や the book のように、相手もどれかわかっている特定のものは、それを主語にして言います。

はじめて話題にするもの

There is a bag on the desk.

机の上にかばんがあります。

特定のもの

My bag is on the desk.

私のかばんは机の上にあります。
