数と序数（first, second …）
one, two, three … ＝ 数 ／ first, second, third … ＝「〜番目の」
1数の言い方
1〜12 はそれぞれ別の語です。13〜19 は -teen、20・30 … 90 は -ty で終わります。21 からは twenty-one のように、10の位と1の位をハイフン（-）でつなぎます。40 は forty で、four とつづりがちがうので注意しましょう。

2大きな数の読み方
英語では、数を3けたごとに区切って読みます。カンマ（,）のところが thousand（千）、million（百万）です。日本語の「1万」は ten thousand（10の千）になります。hundred や thousand の前に2以上の数があっても、s はつけません（two hundred）。

3序数とは
序数は「〜番目の」と順番を表す言い方です。ふつうは the や my などをつけて使います。数字で書くときは 1st、2nd、3rd、4th のように、最後の2文字をそえます。

建物の階は、アメリカ英語では1階を first floor と言います。イギリス英語では1階を ground floor と言い、first floor は2階になります。
4序数のつくり方のきまり
ふつうは数に th をつけます。ただし、形が変わるものがあるので注意しましょう。21番目からは、最後の数だけを序数にします。

5日付と年の読み方
日付は、書くときは October 28 でも、読むときは October twenty-eighth のように序数で読むのがふつうです（イギリスでは the twenty-eighth of October とも言います）。年は、ふつう2けたずつ区切って読みます。

6回数の言い方とニュースの中の数
「1回」は once、「2回」は twice、3回からは three times のように〈数 ＋ times〉で表します。「週に2回」は twice a week です。ニュースでは、台風の番号や優勝の回数、参加した人数などに数と序数がよく出てきます。
I go to the gym twice a week.
私は週に2回ジムに行きます。
We visited Nara three times.
私たちは奈良を3回たずねました。
I saw snow for the first time.
